Guest Book
During my U City days, I attended Blackberry Lane Elementary School, Brittany Junior High, and U City High. Since graduation, I received my B.A. at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) and in 1980, became an ordained rabbi at Leo Baeck College in London. I served pulpits in England, Canada, and the United States. My current pulpit is in the NYC area. I married Dr. Tsiporah Shore in Winnipeg in 1990. Our daughter, Leanne, just graduated law school and passed the bar and is working for CAIR (Capital Area Immigration Rights) and our son, Joshua, is current a senior consultant for Ernst Young. For every mountain, there is a John Boy and for every John Boy, there is a mountain. University City is my mountain!! I have longed for this reunion for a very long time!
Most of you don't know me, so I'll keep it short. I loved my years at U Forest elementary school so much! But my parents moved after 5th grade, and my life went down hill from there. Seriously, I was unhappy in 6th grade (in Princeton, NJ, where my Dad was on sabbatical) and then in 7th through 10th grade in Clayton. Finally, around half way through my junior year at Clayton High, I began to feel accepted and began to enjoy it. Since then, ups and downs but way more ups. For those who are curious, I have an extensive personal web site. It includes an autobiographical essay that includes a few sentences about my U Forest years. I would love to hear from any U Forest alums.
Looking forward to seeing you in person next year This should be a great time to get together with our friends and their families Becca
Fifty years in one paragraph?! Graduated from Wheaton College (MA) and married my high school sweet heart, Mike Kahn (U. City '70) 47 years ago! Worked 2 years for the Chicago and Boston Jewish Federations before going back for my M.S.W. at Boston University. Moved to Chicago and worked briefly in Northwestern University Admissions before the first of our 5 children, Hanna, was born in 1979. I was a weekday stay-at-home Mom, leading parent-child classes on weekends in Evanston. Our sons Jake and Josh were born in 1981 and 1983. Two years later we moved back to St. Louis to be with our families--the best decision we ever made! Our son Zack was born in 1985, and our daughter Kayla in 1987. I worked part-time as a fund-raiser, and later as the Community Relations Coordinator for COCA. On the side, I honed my baking and cooking skills and worked in inner-city after-school programs teaching literacy and cooking classes. I became the food columnist for St. Louis Jewish Light in 2006, and a culinary educator teaching at the Kitchen Conservatory and around town. When COVID hit, we decided to move back to Chicago on a trial basis. Both of our eldest live here, along with 5 of our 9 grandchildren--another great decision! We travel to Minneapolis, Boston, and New York on a regular basis to visit our other kids and grandkids. When we're not visiting our kids, Mike and I have traveled to Spain and Italy on bicycle tours, and hiked Acadia in Maine, and Bryce Canyon and Zion in Utah. Between walking and biking and rediscovering Chicago, we're staying busy. Life is good! I feel blessed.
I didn't graduate from U City. I left after my junior and went to 5 colleges before graduating from Webster College and then California State University in Long Beach with an MA in Theater Arts. I started out as a director, then moved into television, and then into science journalism, where I hung out for a few decades. I also write humor and draw, and my novel Hysterical: Anna Freud's Story did pretty well. I live in New York City. Two kids -- grown, of course. Although I didn't know him at U City, for more than 40 years I've been friends with Morty Milder, who graduated the year before you all did.
I can't believe that 51 years has gone by so quickly. I am grateful for the wonderful education I received from University City High School. I was married for 17 years and have a wonderful son that lives in the state of Washington. I am divorced and have been on my own since 1994. I feel very fortunate that I have had good health all these years. I retired in 2019 right before Covid came to the world, after working a variety of accounting and other related jobs for 55 years. I have been spending most of my time replacing and updating stuff in my home, which seems to be a never ending battle. I have a retired cattle herding Australian Shepard and we go for walks every day. I hope to doing some traveling in the future and see more of the world.
50 years oh my: Graduated from Boulder, married Clayton girl-who has put up with me for 46 years. Two beautiful daughters who live in San Diego. Athletic and smart (10) year old Twin g-boys. Peat Marwick, Monsanto, IBM, Amdahl, Collaborative Strategies, Sherwood Forest Camp and mentoring of many small businesses & start-ups have provided many life and business lessons (plus all my therapy sessions). Wrote a book: Who Says A Fish Can't Sell. Spend time at the lake, bike rides, golf, walk, read & mentor for SCORE & Capital Innovators -currently occupies my time.
My life since UCHS. I have to admit I’ve lost contact with pretty much anyone from the class of ’71! I went to SIU-Edwardsville for a degree in Mass Comm/TV-Radio. After college I hooked up with a startup video production facility - Innervision Productions, as senior editor, chief engineer, Vice President, bit of everything - doing TV commercials and corporate videos. We grew and grew and in 1985 got bought by a division of Anheuser Busch, allowing us to grow even more, until they sold us off in 2000. I then helped start up another production facility, followed by part-time & freelance work in the St. Louis video production scene, enjoying the freedom that offered. In non work life - I married my wife Lois Gruberger in 1988, we have one son, born in 1990. Lois is an artist and college art professor, originally from New York. In 2007 she took a teaching job at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD in Savannah, GA). I continued to eek out a few more years of work in St. Louis, while getting to know the Atlanta airport concourses by heart, regularly flying the STL-ATL-Savannah route. I finally moved full time to Savannah in 2018, when we both retired. Retirement has allowed Lois the time to get back to doing her own art - watercolor and collage, while I have gone deep back into my photography hobby that started as a 10 year old kid. On instagram @mgerspix, and a sales site mgerspix.com. I don’t plan to be at the reunion, hope everyone has a great time.
Hello Fellow Classmates, I'm looking forward to reconnecting and celebratng 51 years since graduating from high school. Life after high school has been challenging, but fulfilling: I completed college with a major in Criminal Justice Administration and minor in Physical Education. My career involved being among the 1st civilian police dispatchers for the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department; management positions at the Kansas City, Missouri and St. Louis Greyhound Bus Terminals; assistant to the Commissioner of the St. Louis City Correctional Institutions and various public relations positions before pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors. I have been married for 22 years and share love with my husband's 2 children; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. This will be my first high school reunion, and I'm excited for the opportunity to go back in time and laugh like a teenager again.
We were all so lucky! UCity, in so many ways, gave me the confidence to explore a world of opportunities. My desire to be involved in media and education began with Mr. Jackaway in the media lab. Mr. Lawless promoted my love of art and design. Politics, history & social activism were all encouraged by Mr. Park. And, Mrs. Jackson continues to be an enduring inspiration for her love of learning and determination to squeeze every ounce of joy and meaning from each moment. The Washington, D.C. area became, and still is, my home. American University was the place where I launched my lifetime of adventures. I've had a wonderful, interesting and satisfying collection of jobs and professional careers. While at AU I worked on Capitol Hill for 3 years. After graduation I received a fellowship at the State Department in the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs and wrote a guidebook to orient foreign students to American culture. My first real job was writing and designing educational materials and coordinating training conferences nationwide, about 60 a year, for the National Center for Voluntary Action. It was at the Center that I met my Fairy Godmother. At 65 she waved her magic wand and financed Berns & Kay, our graphic design firm. We specialized in the writing, design and development of promotional and educational materials. B&K thrived for 25 years until computers dramatically changed the industry. So, in 2000 I morphed from a graphic designer to a personal chef & caterer giving birth to a new company, CustomKosher. My husband and I have been together for 48 years. We have 2 grown sons, one on each coast. Our almost 2 year old grandson is in Los Angeles and a granddaughter is on the way in Boston. We're thrilled by the prospect of watching them grow. Lots of travel, crafting and a lifetime enjoying our grandchildren is what we hope to do together for many years when I retire next spring. Looking forward to seeing you all at the reunion!
Greetings. How can it be that 51 years has passed? I am sorry that I won't be able to attend the reunion. I've been to St. Louis twice in the last few months and can't manage another trip now. I live in Boston where I am still actively working though hoping to wind down. I have reared a son and a daughter and made my career here. I have been married to my second husband for almost 18 years now. We have six grandchildren who take over our lives in various configurations in the summer. I am Chair of the Designators of a foundation that gives out money for physical and historical improvements in Boston; I manage a grant for programs at the Roxbury branch of the Boston Public Library; and I coordinate the Creative Entrepreneur Fellowship of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston. I am also active in a couple of community-based organizations. I published stories and a few poems in my 20s and 30, a few essays in my 40s. During the pandemic, I self-published a children's book, Stacey Became a Frog One Day. I have since published Jump! Jump! Jump! Stacey (in 2021), and a 3rd book in the series is scheduled in November. I certainly expected to have more published by now - that I don't is because I didn't push through rejections and took too much time off thinking that I had more time. I was young and then I got old. I am still shopping manuscripts around. Mostly, life has been good. I am proud that I have contributed positively to the my little neck of the world and that I have great children and grandchildren. I hope to continue to be a positive and loving force in our terrific and fragile planet for the time I have left. I hope your dreams and goals are coming true. In loving community, Candelaria.
Hello. I wanted to share a couple of articles about Herman Shaw. Some of our classmates may remember him from U City High when he was an administrator for quite some time. I came across the articles because I am a resident of Edwardsville, where Mr. Shaw grew up and still resides. I thought it was interesting reading and worth sharing. Here are the links: https://madison-historical.siue.edu/archive/items/show/903 https://www.theintelligencer.com/sports/article/Edwardsville-High-School-announces-second-Hall-of-17522475.phphttps://www.theintelligencer.com/insider/article/WHERE-ARE-THEY-NOW-Sports-helped-build-Shaw-s-16440055.php
After 51 years away from U. City and St. Louis, I still have a soft spot for our hometown. This August I got tickets to one of the Cubs-Cardinals games at Wrigley Field and found myself upset every time the Cards made an error. And that was after 30 years in Chicago and ostensibly being a Cubs fan. Somehow there was a real sense of place where we came from which never left me. I am wondering if some of you feel the same way. Since high school I have lived in Boston, Jerusalem, Austin, Chicago, Tel Aviv and Ann Arbor. But Chicago is really home and since moving to Ann Arbor in 2010 I find every excuse in the book to get back. Along the way I received a B.A. in economics from Boston University and stayed on to earn my M.B.A in health care management. I worked in many different healthcare arenas including administration, marketing, operations management and policy which took me to a variety of settings. I happily retired from full time work in 2016. After years in healthcare, my hope is that our country can, at some future point, provide decent healthcare to all of its citizens. I married Mark Daskin in 1978, an east coaster who I converted to a midwesterner. Mark taught engineering at UT Austin, Northwestern and the University of Michigan and hence our wanderings around the country and the world. He is now a newly retired academic. We have two great daughters, Tamar in Chicago and Keren in New York, and we try to spend as much time as possible with them. We love to travel and hope to continue our world exploration now that we are not tied down to a schedule. I always find myself doing fundraising and board work for the Jewish community in the places I land. In recent years I have been a foot soldier in many Michigan political campaigns, walker/hiker, member of two book groups, baker, chef and a fan of Michigan's unsalted western shores. Thankfully both Mark and I are healthy and are able to enjoy life. I hope to be at the reunion but, if not, please check in when you are in Ann Arbor or Chicago! All the best to everyone!
Following graduation from U City, I attended Drake University where I received a degree in Journalism-Public Relations/Advertising. I became the editor for a trade publication that went to the painting and decorating industry. In 1977, I married Mark Shulman (U City ’70). Over the next 15 years, Mark and I became the parents of three wonderful children – Carolyn, Brent and Sarah. I left my editor job to work as a preschool teacher at United Hebrew - the preschool all three of our kids attended. Following Sarah’s preschool days, I went to work for a textbook publisher where I proofread from home medical and educational textbooks. After that company merged with another company I began to work for Guidebook Publishing Company. They publish Church Guidebooks and Directories where I have worked part time for the past 24 years. Throughout our kid’s elementary and middle school days, I volunteered in several areas of those schools. When our youngest graduated from middle school, the principal at the time said “What are we going to do without you?” Jokingly, I said, “Hire me” which is exactly what she did. For the next 15 years, I worked mainly in student services until my retirement in June, 2021. A few days after my retirement, I had an appointment with my chiropractor and she asked what was new? I told her I had just retired and she said, “Great! Now you can come work here!” I thought she was joking but it turned out she was not. So, while I still proofread church guidebooks, I also work a couple of mornings a week in the chiropractor’s office. In my spare time I enjoy needlepointing, reading and volunteer work. Mark and I enjoy babysitting for our grandchildren and traveling. We recently celebrated the marriage of our youngest so now all three children will share Labor Day weekend anniversaries. Carolyn and Josh and their 2 boys live in Austin, TX. Brent, Amanda and their 2 children live in Chesterfield and Sarah and Marc live in Richmond Heights. While it’s hard to believe 51 years have passed since our high school graduation, I look back at those high school years as a wonderful time in my life. Wishing everyone good health and happiness.
50 years in a paragraph!! I graduated from UMR, made laser mirrors in New Mexico before starting a year of travel to Mexico, Central America, France, Spain finally landing in Tangier, Morocco where I taught physics, chemistry and science at the American School there. Gisele, ecole maternelle teacher and school psychologist, and I traded vacations hiking in the Atlas Mountains, travleing to Greece, the Mediterranean countries, and Scotland. I earned a Licence in physics, almost a maitrise, from the University of Paris, Paris VI, before returning home to Albuquerque. A PhD in nuclear physics from U Wisconsin-Madison--Thomas and Juliette were born in Madison--Go Badgers!! After a post-doc I became an accelerator staff member at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA. GE has been my professional home since '99 as an x-ray physicist/engineer in Milwaukee, WI and Niskayuna, NY at the R&D Center here. . . until Nov 1, 2020 when I retired. I continue to consult. Gisele taught English, French, and champtions literacy council activities. We've never been far from France, as half our children's extended family is there. We've hiked the Alps, Jura, and the Pyrenees and have watched a number of Tour de France stages in the Southwest. Skiing, hiking, cycling, travel have been ou pursuits over the years, although the March 2020 trip to ski there ended with COVID lock-down. Look for me on Strava!
I cannot believe it has been 51 years since we graduated high school. After graduation, I attended Webster College, where I received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1975. In December, 1976, I married Rick Schwartz (U City 1969) and moved to Colonial Heights, Virginia, where Rick accepted a position teaching music at Virginia State University. I started my own Instrumental Music Program in the private and Catholic schools in Petersburg, VA, teaching Band to grades 4-12 for over 35 years. I was an adjunct professor at Richard Bland College, where I served as Conductor of a 35 member Wind Ensemble for 36 years. In 1994, I founded and remain Conductor of a 45 member concert band called the Richmond Symphonic Winds. I am also Founder and Conductor of the Tri-Cities Community Band and Musical Director of the Concert Ballet of Virginia Orchestra. Rick and I have performed together in the Richmond and Petersburg Symphony Orchestras, as well as performing on historical instruments throughout Central Virginia in a Renaissance Quartet, German Band and a Brass Band. Throughout my career, I taught private flute lessons and am a frequent judge at local music contests and festivals. I also served as Adjunct Professor of Flute at Virginia State University. In my retirement from teaching, I frequently play solo flute for various non-profit and charity events, such as art exhibit openings, historic house tours and holiday gatherings. I perform every Saturday for the local Farmers Market. Even though I have been away from St. Louis for almost 46 years, my interest in St. Louis history still flourishes. Rick and I wrote and published two books entitled Bands at the St. Louis World's Fair, acquired by librairies across the country, including the Smithsonian Institution. Our only child is a very special three-year-old tabby cat named Pookie lll.
So excited the 50th Reunion will take place this year and can't wait to see everyone! After high school, I attended Washington University for 2 years, but became disillusioned and did some overseas traveling. I wound up in then-Yugoslavia and had quite an adventure by not being able to leave because of the existing government bureaucracy. I got home eventually and decided to work instead of returning to school, and found a successful niche doing Marketing & PR for a couple of large companies. I met my husband, Mike, 2 weeks before he entered dental school and we've been married for 44 years. We have three sons - our eldest lives with his wife in Switzerland and they're expecting their first baby in a few weeks, our first grandchild! We're fortunate that our other two sons (the middle one is married) live in the St. Louis area. While raising our children, I, as an only child, was called upon to care for my parents, who were significantly older than many others. We had a multi-generational family for a number of years and I wouldn't have done it differently. I became very active in synagogue life (Shaare Zedek in U. City), serving as President and then went on to volunteer extensively for the international board of Conservative Judaism, working with youth and many synagogues all over the U.S., Canada & Israel. I managed my husband's dental practice from 2010-2020 and then, voilà, retirement. Probably one of my proudest accomplishments is that I've been a DJ for 32 years on public radio in St. Louis with "Folks of the World," a genre of music I fell in love with from folk dancing at the Heman Park Center on Saturday nights during high school. I can't reiterate enough how lucky we were to be at U. City at that time in history, with the wonderful teachers and classmates, all surrounded by the changes that were happening all around us!!
So sorry I won't be joining you all for this incredible milestone event. I left St. Louis to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder and I'm still a Boulderite! The iconic Flatirons rock formations, gorgeous weather and a liberal community called me out here and I cherish these views every day. They say "Boulder is 12 square miles surrounded by reality" I met my husband Ed of 38 years in 1974. He and about 15 friends moved to Colorado from the Detroit area to become rock and roll stars. You can guess how that went! I gained a now 49 year old stepson from Ed's first, way too young marriage. I have known Shawn since he was 2. Shawn and his family live in the Boulder area and I'm a Nana to a 15 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. Ed and I love to travel, hike, bike, golf and of course love live music! Jamaica and France are our favorite places so far. We do enjoy road trips to our amazing national parks and big cities. I am lucky to have loved my career and have now been retired for 4 years. My graduate degrees from the U of Colorado include a MS in Healthcare Administration and an MBA. I retired from a not for profit Catholic health system as the Operations Director for Primary Care, Outpatient Rehabiliation and Occupational Medicine. Health and Wellness have been my passion and it was a great ride. I wish you all a fabulous reunion and best wishes for health and good times! PJ
First, I want to convey my condolences to all of the families and friends of our classmates who have died. Too many of our classmates have died at such young ages. I extend my deepest sypmathy to those classmates that have lost children and grandchildren. One of my biggest fears in life is to outlive my children and grandchildren. Second, I want to thank all of the members of the Reunion Committee for the countless hours they spent and the difficuly decisions they have made to make our Reunion possible. I graduated from UMSL (BSBA) in 1975 and worked at Arthur Andersen & Co from 1975 until 1981. I taught Income Tax at UMSL for one semester and started my CPA firm in 1981. I merged my firm with Anders CPAs Advisors in 2018. I retired from Anders in 2020 and moved to Denver in 2021. I was named as one of St. Louis' outstanding Tax Practitioners by Money Magazine in 1987. I married my wonderful wife, Judy Schoemehl, in 1976; still married in 2022. We have 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy (Kelly-Denver, Patrick-Portland, OR, Nicole-Venice Beach, CA). Kelly has 2 children, 1 boy and 1 girl (Jack and Ryan). Over the years, I have coached my kids' soccer, softball and baseball teams and have refereed youth and high school soccer games. I have donated blood on a regular basis since high school and continue to donate platelets about 9 times per year. I do some consulting during my post-retirement years and spend as much time as possible with my grandchildren. I hope to travel much more now that I have more time and can't wait to learn to ski with my grandson, Jack. I wish safe travel to all those attending the Reunion in St. Louis and look forward to seeing you at the Reunion.
Hi, all, here is my update. After U City, I went to Harvard and Harvard Law, and then spent the next ten years as a legal services lawyer in Florida and California. I got married to my wife, Sara, in 1985, and in 1988, we moved to the DC area, where we have lived since then. Most of the time in DC, I've been involved in policy work, research and advocacy around poverty, and immigration issues. From 2009-17, I was at the federal Administration for Children and Families in the Obama Administration, and now I'm at HHS' Office of the General Counsel in the Biden Administration. We have two wonderful daughters, Leah and Rosa, and we became grandparents when Zeke was born to Leah and her husband, Ezra, in 2020.
It's great to read the entries of so many old friends from '71! After graduation I went away for ten years of college, grad school and law school. I met my wife, Maxine Lipeles, duirng our senior year in college, we started dating four years later during law school and married in 1980. After living in Boston for two years, we moved to University City (up the block from where our classmates and my UCity tennis teammates Jimmy Cornbleet and Frank Richards used to live) so I could fulfill my dream of practicing law with my father. Our two children were born and became the center of our universe. We moved to Clayton in 1989 and they attended its schools. In 1994, I left law practice to join the faculty of Saint Louis University law school where I taught primarily constitutional law courses and wrote about the American vice presidency and constitutional law topics. Maxine founded the Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic at Washington University which provided pro bono legal representation in environmental cases. We retired from our academic positions in 2019, and in 2020 moved to Wellfleet on Cape Cod where we'd been vacationing since the 1990s. The move puts us closer to our children, who live on the east coast, and our two granddaughters. Maxine does some part-time public interest environmental law work and I write and lecture some but mostly we take long daily walks in the woods and on the beaches of the national seashore, play with our granddaughters most weeks, and enjoy having visitors and seeing other friends. I've been very fortunate, including growing up in U. City and attending its schools! Have a great reunion; I'm sorry a family conflict keeps me from being with you. All the very best!
I won't be making it to the reunion but still miss. U. City. After high school my parents moved to Iowa City and I went off to CA to college. I returned to St. Louis for med school and residency. My 1st job was in Philadelphia then I spent 4 yrs at the NIH in Washington DC. I was recruited to Alabama, of all places, and have been here in Birmingham for 30 yrs. Along the way I got married to Mary Ann of Florissant and had two sons. One is a lawyer who doesn't practice law and one is an accountant here in Birmingham. I still work as a pathologist at the Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham. As for activities outside work, I seem to change interests every few years. I sailed, played tennis, coached soccer, rode bikes and for awhile made jewelry. Someday I might retire. I'd love to hear from anyone who's interested in getting in touch.
T0 all: More and more I appreciate the education I received at U.City High. When I tell people we had classes in Russian, Hebrew, etc and had an Esperanto club, they can't believe it. We had a diversity of peoples and faiths and with a few exceptions tried to get along. I credit U.City with my life-long love of learning. More about that later. My family consists of my husband John and our two daughters. Daughter Lua owns Common Ground healthfood store in Bloomington, IL. Daughter Zhalih is married with two boys Cassius and Atticus and has her hands full being a school psychologist for Bloomington Schools. I finally graduated from Illinois State University as a non-traditional student in 1997 with a degree in Mass Communications/Journalism but realized that my union custodial job had a better retirement plan than the local newspaper and retired from being a school custodian. However, I still am working on several books and hope to publish some when I grow up! Spiritually, I was blessed to know people of many different belief systems over the years. I have sampled many including Baptist Sunday School, Catholicism, Egyptian gods and goddesses, Wicca, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha'i, Native American Spirituality and Spiritualism. Primarily, I am interested in the healing practices of each faith. The past two years, I have been interested in Sound Healing as an alternative healing modality. In November, I will travel to Egypt with a Sound Healer who will guide us to different temples and chant and play crystal healing bowls. So, on my birthday November 8th while you are awaiting the outcome of the lastest election, I will be at the Temple of Horus and the healing Temple of Kom Ombo praying hard for the healing of America. All this will happen if I dodge the new Covid or any other bad germ that comes along. I have relatives who have it now and have had friends and relatives that died from it.So stay healthy. Mitakuye Oyasin (All My Relations) Shalom. Blessings

After dropping out of college, walking the Appalachian tail, I came to Israel as a Kibbutz volunteer in Jan. 1975, and decided to stay in Israel. After two months on the Kibbutz I started studying in the Diaspora Yeshiva on Mt. Zion in Jerusalem. I stayed there for many years, completed my Rabbinic ordination with the Israeli Rabbinate, married, had eight children, and after 18 years of marriage we divorced. Several years later I married my present wife Ellen, who also has eight children of her own. I also went to Social Work school, got an MSW, and worked as a social worker, mainly with religious youth at risk. Ellen and I presently live in Bat Ayin - Gush Etzion. We now have many grandchildren between the two of us. I teach Talmud and do private therapy. And now for the story you've waited 50 years to hear: the Senior Class Prank that went wrong. I don't remember which of you guys was my partner in crime, so please write to me if it was you. We found out that in a previous year the Seniors had created a mixture in Joe Hale's chemistry lab of Nitrogen tri-iodide. We were told that as long as it's wet it's stable, but when you put drops of it on the floor and they dry out it makes a small explosion like a cap gun. We secretly mixed up a bottle of it in the lab and I took it home to put into dropper bottles to give out to my co-consipirators to put drops on the floor before school starts so that the next day school would start with a bang. As I'm pouring the mixture in the dropper bottles, some of it spilled. I wasn't worried because it was still wet... Well lo and behold it started popping off even when it was wet. When it started popping on my arm. At that point I saw that it was too dangerous to complete the prank, so I put all the bottles away, washed up the bathroom and washed the rest of the mixture down the drain, and went to bed. A few minutes later... BOOM!!! End of prank, end of bathroom sink. But not end of story. There was still some of the mixture in Joe Hale's chemistry lab. We had to tell him. He called Washington U. to find out how to defuse it. They told him to bubble chlorine gas into it, which he did and ... BOOM!! (It was under the protective hood so he wasn't hurt.)
Looking forward to the reunion! Retired 4 years ago from Mercy as a NICU RN. Wonderful career working with an amazing team for 38 years. Married for 43 years to Bud. Three sons, heped with most parent activities, scouts, sports, room parents etc. Aaron works for Rawlins Sports, David an RN at BJC, and Tommy a music teacher. We are currently blessed with 5 grandchildren under 5. Worth retiring for. Fortunatley they all live close by. During covid we did a lot of babysitting! In 1980 we bought a fixer upper in Webster Groves where now we are currently the seniors on the block. Enjoy gardening, participated in three garden tours. Traveling as much as possible. During the 2017 flood in southern MO our river home was flooded. With Buds carpentery skills the home was rebuilt. We continue to enjoy extended weekends on the river with family and friends. Last year I joined a bowling team with retired nursing friends. Its all about the fun right. But I did participate in an after school bowling group at the Arcade bowling alley on Olive. Take Care, Mary
I signed the guest book when it first came out as all the Reunion Committee were encouraged to do so. It is a bit outdated now. Hi Everyone! What can I say. Fifty years is a long time. Time goes by so quickly. Ok, so I will try to sum it all up. I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, Benjy, for nearly 48 years. We have one son, BJ, who lives in LA and works in the entertainment industry. BJhas produced several award-winning programs. I’m not a bragging type of mom, but I’m very proud to share he has won two Emmy’s! He is happily married to an amazing woman and we’ve been blessed with a beautiful little granddaughter. One more is on the way this January! We are very excited to say the least! I received a Bachelor and Masters degree in Education and am a Licensed Professional Counselor. After teaching special education, I pursued a career as a school counselor, retiring after 31 years in 2009. While officially retired, I continue to stay active in my field part-time at MICDS, assisting with lower-school admissions as an evaluator. I also work as a Clinical Supervisor, assisting student teachers for WGU. Benjy and I love traveling. We’ve had a lot of wonderful adventures! When the pandemic hit we bought a RV and joined the RV community. While we have been traveling the country, our journeys tend to focus our time in LA and visits with our granddaughter, “BAER“. We have two standard poodles who are always happy to go with us, a major RV plus! I am truly thankful for all the good things that have happened in my life and for all the amazing friends I’ve made along the way! Happy 50th Reunion to you all! Wishing you good health and days filled with happiness!
It's hard to believe it's been 51 years! Received my undergrad and grad degrees in Music Therapy and Music Ed. at the University of Kansas. Lived in Napa, CA; Salem, Oregon; back to St. Louis; met my husband Bryan (a Normandy '72 grad and Music Therapist) and married in 1978; moved to Rochester, NY where we both accepted jobs at Nazareth College. While he continued to teach there, I built a music therapy practice in BOCES, the NY equivalent of the Special School District in STL. I retired 5 years ago after 33 years at the same facility and Bryan retired 2 years ago after 38 years of teaching and leading the Creative Arts Graduate Program. Staying at one job is a real rarity in this day and age! Raised 3 kids (2 girls and a boy), bought a travel trailer and made those kids suffer through two 6 week vacations out west to see the National Parks! Bought a boat, then bought a second boat as we are surrounded by fabulous water - Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, and the Erie Canal which is just 5 minutes from our home. We have both been active in our faith communities leading music - traditional, contemporary, orchestral. I have led women's Bible studies, helped on missions trips to Honduras and Bolivia, and am now heading up the Children's Ministries at my church. Once a teacher, always a teacher! I have composed and recorded 2 CDs of original music (shout-out to Roger Warner for being a great Band Director). What a blessed life and what an honor to say I'm a U. City graduate! Looking forward to seeing everyone in October.
After high school, I attended UMSL and received a BA in psychology and then an MSW from SLU. I worked for almost 36 years for St. Louis County Justice Services. Since then I have been working as a PRN counselor at the Edgewood Intensive Outpatient program through Mercy Hospital. I have been married to Karen for 41 years. She has a PhD and CPA. She has been a college professor for over 25 years in accounting and is a forensic economist. We have a daughter who has a PhD and is an associate research professor and son-in-law who is an MD in the field of oncology. .They have adorable 4 year old twin daughters. My son and daughter-in-law also have PhD's and live in Canada with their two adorable children ages 5 and 1. He is a data analyst and she is an assistant professor at a university up there. I don't think I will be able to attend the reunion due to a family scheduling conflict that weekend, but I wish you all well and would love to hear from you and even meet up with those of you who are still in St. Louis
Hello UCity classmates. Hard to believe... Fifty-one years from our high school graduation, a pretty amazing accomplishment in itself and I still feel so grateful to have grown up in such a special place like UCity. After High School I attended Mizzou for two years where I met my future husband Mark Kram (Ladue '69). Mark and I got married after my sophomore year and then we moved to Jerusalem. I studied at Hebrew University on the Junior Year Abroad program, while Mark began his first year of graduate school to become a Reform rabbi at Hebrew Union College. It was an amazing life-changing and growing up year for us, especially living there during the Yom Kippur war. After that year, we returned to Cincinnati, OH, completing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the U of Cincinnati. My first real job upon graduation was the special projects coordinator for the Director of Emergency Medicine at the UC Medical School. While working there full-time I took advantage of the opportunity to study and complete the paramedic training program through my department. Upon Mark's graduation from the five-year rabbinical school program, we moved to Tampa and then to Miami, FL, where we lived for over 40 years before retiring to Cary, NC, to live closer to our children/grandchildren and farther away from Hurricanes!!! (Not UM Hurricanes!) Our house was severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Fortunately, we were able to rebuild. We raised three wonderful children in Miami, FL: two sons and a daughter - all married now. And we continue to count our blessings with the addition of four precious, healthy grandchildren. I loved the many and varied careers I have had; teaching first aid at community college; working as Director of Jewish college student programs for the statewide Florida Hillel Council where among my job highlights, I coordinated and lead one of the inaugural Israel Birthright trips, taking over 400 Florida college students to Israel to learn about their heritage. I also helped to launch the first U.S. College March of the Living program - a Holocaust education program - traveling to Poland and Israel. My last job brought me back to healthcare, where I supervised the Behavioral and Collaborative Medicine Program at a large hospital network, focusing on stress management programs for patients, staff, and community. Mark and I have had a great run, married for almost 50 years and continue to love sharing our time together, being with our family, and participating in many outdoor activities especially biking, kayaking, hiking and pickleball! I am looking forward to seeing as many of you at our 51st reunion.
